Evaluation of the Foundation Phase Initiative (FPI) for the LEGO Foundation

The LEGO Foundation has contracted NBA as a research partner to conduct evaluation research for the Foundation Phase Initiative (FPI). The FPI is a partnership between the Department of Education (DBE), UNESCO, Care for Education (CfE) and the LEGO Foundation. The programme is focused on equipping Foundation Phase teachers to use play-based learning and manipulatives (Six Bricks) in their classrooms. Our evaluation work to date has included a large scale survey of teachers who have been trained in Gauteng, Free State and Eastern Cape, teacher interviews and lesson observations.

Development of Guidelines on Open and Distance Learning for Youth and Adult Literacy

NBA was commissioned by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) and the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) to develop Guidelines on open and distance learning for youth and adult literacy. These guidelines support literacy providers around the world in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating their open and distance learning-based (ODL) literacy programmes.

World Bank Training Assessment Project Survey Implementation

NBA has provided extensive research and technical expertise to support the design and implementation of Training Assessment Project (TAP) surveys for Eastern European countries (Romania, Ukraine, and Belarus) and East Asian Pacific countries (Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Tonga, and Lao PDR) for the World Bank. These surveys have focused on assessing the extent of alignment of TVET systems in participating countries to international best practices in TVET systems identified through desktop research.

Evaluation of the Africa Careers Network Expansion Pilot programme

Using action research, NBA evaluated the effectiveness and potential for scaling the African Leadership Academy’s (ALA) Africa Careers Network (ACN) Expansion Pilot Programme. ACN is a platform that connects young African talent from ALA and the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Programme to internships and job opportunities across Africa. The pilot programme ran in South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, and Ethiopia and aimed to enhance the career trajectory of students.

Development of PIECCE’s Early Childhood Care and Education tutorial

NBA developed a multimedia rich tutorial on being and becoming an early years teacher for Project for Inclusive Early Childhood Care and Education (PIECCE). The tutorial used images, animations and video to tutor educators on the importance of using different types of reflection as part of their studies.

Support to Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance to design and deliver courses online

Between 2017-2021, NBA helped Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance (MGSLG) develop and pilot an online ICT literacy programme, called MG Online. MGSLG, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education, is administering the programme for approximately 10,000 teachers in Gauteng province. NBA assisted MGSLG adapt existing open educational resources (OER) and develop new South Africa-specific content. In total, 56 units comprising 80 notional hours were developed for this initial teacher training course.
