Pratham Books, Room to Read and Book Dash are among the international winners of the USA’s Library of Congress’ Literacy Awards Program

These non-governmental organizations (NGOs), which have innovatively adopted open licensing publishing and distribution models and that specialize in solving early literacy challenges in developing nations, were selected along with a list of other initiatives, ‘for their exemplary work in ensuring that children continue to build critical literacy skills.’

Continuing professional development

CPD is a requirement for the maintenance of professional designations, applicable in many charitable and educational fields such as teaching, healthcare, and higher education. There is a deep need for capacity building of professionals in these sectors to help improve skills and performance for wider social impact. Through our work, NBA has discovered that, for CPD to be effective and impactful, it needs to be granular, targeted towards solving problems in the daily life of a professional, and based on effective needs analysis.

Technical and vocational training

NBA is engaged in the TVET sector in both South Africa and India, as well as having supported research and policy work in other contexts such as Lesotho and Eastern Europe, with the ultimate goal of strengthening the quality of and access to job training resources in these developing economies, particularly for disadvantaged individuals and communities. Central to this work has been engagement with the urgent need for systemic reform in TVET to enable it to modernize and meet the growing vocational education and job training demands in developing countries.
