The Commonwealth of Learning (COL), the Commonwealth Secretariat (ComSec), and Microsoft recently supported the creation of an ICT Professional Development Strategy for Teachers in Guyana, building on the UNESCO ICT Competence Framework for Teachers (CFT). The ICT CFT intends to inform educational policy makers, teacher educators, providers of professional learning and working teachers on the role of ICT in educational reform, as well as to assist countries in developing national ICT competency standards for teachers with an ICT in Education Master Plan approach.
In Guyana, the ICT Professional Development Strategy for Teachers is based on the assumption that, if teacher training programmes embrace ICT, there will be improvements in learner performance. It acknowledges the central role that education officials, teacher trainers, educators, and learners play in the implementation and support of ICT in education.
